Indigenous Engagement & Inclusion Policy

1. Land Acknowledgment & Respect

Stromsten Transportation Group recognizes that our operations occur on the traditional territories and unceded lands of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across British Columbia and Western Canada. We honor the heritage, treaties, and inherent rights of those communities whose land we operate on. Our business activities remain grounded in respect, consultation, and acknowledgement of Indigenous authority and stewardship.

2. Respectful Engagement & Free Before Consent

We commit to meaningful, respectful, and transparent consultation with Indigenous communities in proximity to project sites—guided by the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us." We will pursue free, prior, and informed consent for all initiatives that affect Indigenous lands, cultures, or rights, and we will engage local leadership, elders, and community representatives as partners throughout the process.

3. Indigenous Employment, Training & Advancement

Aligned with the federal Employment Equity Act, we proactively recruit, train, and support Indigenous individuals in logistics, driving, equipment operation, and administrative roles we provide:

  • Culturally safe onboarding and flexible hiring practices

  • Internships and mentorships for Indigenous youth and graduates

  • Career advancement pathways and equitable development opportunities

  • Annual goals and reporting to monitor employment and retention progress

4. Indigenous Procurement & Partnerships

We strive to engage and empower Indigenous-owned businesses in our supply chain. Our commitment includes:

  • Prioritizing Indigenous suppliers and service providers where feasible

  • Structuring subcontracting and joint ventures to foster economic inclusion

  • Promoting Indigenous businesses within client and partner networks

  • Regular review and publication of spending with Indigenous businesses

5. Community Investment & Respectful Giving

We seek to support Indigenous communities through:

  • Sponsorship of cultural, educational, or infrastructure initiatives

  • Participation in local events, job fairs, and skills workshops

  • Knowledge-sharing programs and community-driven capacity-building projects

6. Cultural Awareness & Staff Training

We require all team members to engage with Indigenous cultural competency training. Training topics include:

  • Indigenous history, treaties, and governance

  • Cultural safety in the workplace and community interactions

  • Recognition of systemic barriers and reconciliation principles (TRC, UNDRIP)
We aim to embed continuous learning and inclusion throughout our organization.

7. Governance, Accountability & Review

Our leadership team is accountable for implementing and monitoring Indigenous inclusion practices. We:

  • Assign policy oversight to senior management

  • Set measurable goals, including employment and procurement targets

  • Publish annual progress reports and updates on policy outcomes

  • Revisit and refresh the policy regularly to ensure relevance and impact

8. Long-Term Engagement & Reconciliation

We are committed to supporting reconciliation through sustained relationships with Indigenous communities. This includes amplifying Indigenous voices, fostering trust-based partnerships, and collaborating to produce long-term social, cultural, and economic value. Our efforts respond to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and align with national frameworks such as Practical implementation of UNDRIP and Indigenous rights recognition.
